World Water Day on March 22

Yuli Suharnoto (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Bogor, West Java ● Tue, March 22, 2022 flood and drought are common problems that happen during the rainy and dry seasons in tropical regions like Indonesia. According to the statistical data provided by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), flooding is the major natural disaster in Indonesia, while drought is a minor disaster. Nevertheless, flood and drought management should be handled simultaneously because of the possibility that the surplus water during the rainy season can be transferred to areas with a water deficit. Although drought does not directly cause deaths like flooding, that drought and famine recur necessitate the development of irrigation infrastructures to protect against crop failure and to reduce massive spending on famine relief. World Water Day on March 22 is a good occasion for us to launch a new strategy to cope with floods and drought. Adopting the approach to deal with climate change in Climate Proofing for Development, by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, we have four basic strategies: tackling threats (short term), managing risks (mid-term), increasing adaptive capacities (mid- to long-time term) and identifying the causes of the threats (long-term).
